Geth in Docker on MacOS crashes with I/O errors on mounted FS…

I tried running a geth fast node from the docker container with the chain data mounted onto the host filesystem as in the various examples. This would run for a while and then crash with I/O errors… I eventually tried running geth natively (pointing at the same data location) and it ran until fully synced just fine.

I know that (historically) running a database on a mounted filesystem can be problematic, but this is how people are using geth in docker, isn't it? Or do they make enormous docker images and keep the data inside the image? Is this just a MacOS (Big Sur, Intel) issue? Thanks.
