Why are gas fees so high for ENS domains?

Crypto n00b here. I’m getting more interested in defi and exploring all things eth (I’ve traded btc/eth for about 2 years). I decided to buy a $5 ens domain for my wallet, but it’s $85 just for gas??? Is this just high eth gas fees in general or am I missing something???

I looked through a bit of the sub’s history and know that they released domains late last year that at one point justified the high gas fees bc of demand, but it doesn’t feel like this is it.
