What the *** is up with these gas fees?

I know gas fees have been high with ETH v1 but I went to stake some dough this morning and fees are so high in fact that it almost doesn't make sense to do anything unless you have thousands or hundreds of thousands to play with. Is this going to keep getting worse until ETH2?
