Ethereum Gas Fees

Question. I tried to send $100 worth of ETH from my metamask wallet today. The requested gas fee was $45 in ETH. How is that possible? I also tried Sushi Swap and Uniswap. Similar results. How are people moving ETH with these gas fees?
