What do I invest in when I invest in a native token of a block chain

Hi,

I am new to the crypto world. I understand that there are coins and tokens. Tokens are apps which run on an existing blockchain. The apps have different functionalities (which I still dont fully understand).

But what about the Blockchain native tokens, like Etherium and Solana, what do I invest in when I buy them? Do I invest in the Blockchain network? Is it like buying shares of a specific company when I buy the native token?
