Running an ETH node.

I'm trying to set up my own ETH node and want to use it for checking transactions on chain. For what i'm looking to do, I need to have the fastest sync times possible.

What i'm have trouble finding are these points:

Which client syncs fastest?

Do you need a full node verify trading transactions or is a light node fine?
