What are the benefits of DeFi over current mainstream lending systems?

This feels like a newb question to ask, and believe me I am, but I swear I’ve searched this subreddit along with others like it for a direct answer to this question and come up empty handed. If it has been answered before, if you could please link to the relevant info I would very much appreciate it. Otherwise, anyone have a good answer?
