How do I get into ETH development?

I am a first year University student and I really want into block chain and ETH development but I cannot find any helpful information on the internet most of the resources I find are focused on making dapps instead of contributing to the core. What would be the technical background I need? For information I am a pure math major and I do programming as a hobby. I know the basics of C/C++, Haskell and taken a course in data structures and algorithms.

How do I find more resources on how ETH actually works rather than just blogs and articles with analogies.
