The network or the token?

Having being in the Ethereum ecosystem for a long time (as a user and ETH holder), I'm poised to ask which of these is more beneficial:

1. persistent use of the ethereum mainnet and its proximals for long term benefits (L2s), or

2. holding the ecosystem token, ETH for market gains?
