Hotbit just suffered a serious cyber attack
Official announcement – https://hotbit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500008915521-
Here's a short summary about what happened:
On 20:00 UTC Thursday, 29 April 2021, the cyber attack against Hotbit started. As a result, some basic services were paralyzed. Hotbit disguised this as maintenance.
The attacker tried to gain access to Hotbit's wallets, although thankfully it was stopped before they could get the private key.
The attacker also deleted the user database after failing to get the private key. Hotbit claims they have backups, however the backups may have been altered.
What will Hotbit do?
First of all, Hotbit has shut down all services for a minimum of 7 -14 days.
Second of all, Hotbit claims they will completely rebuild all servers.
What should I do?
The attacker has access to the database, so your email address, phone number, account balances, etc may be leaked. They claim that the passwords and 2FA secrets are encrypted, therefore they are safe (disclaimer: they might not). If your Hotbit password is the same as other accounts, they suggest making your passwords unique (you should be doing this already)
Scammers are leveraging this situation to scam customers. Don't trust, verify.
I highly suggest taking all of your assets out of exchanges and storing them in your own wallet.
