Is it a dumb idea to try and mine from a home PC.

I am recently looking into mining and have a pretty good gpu so thought I should take advantage, however I have read that mining can jeopardise security and isn’t advised on a personal computer. If this is correct I am looking into building a separate computer just to mine.
