Isn’t it glaringly obvious? PoS is the only way.
We are heading towards a global energy crisis. The power to operate our homes, never mind PoW networks, will become scarce. Ergo, ludicrously expensive!
Banks will close, Supermarkets will close [see end], all that will remain are things which do not require vast amounts of energy. The merge happened just in time to save Ethereum from the coming damnation of winter. A winter with scarce energy, mixed with the macro-economic situation of today, is a recipe for disaster.
I'm from UK, which will have one of the worst impacts of any country around the world, due to our strong reliance on CCGT. As I write this, Britain is being powered by 64% Coal & Gas. Only 13% Nuclear. Only 8% wind. It is inevitable that in the coming months, PoW mining will cease to exist here. The costs of operation will wipe the profits out.
From an power/energy perspective, PoS is the only way.
[Supermarkets] This seems like an overly doomeristic thing to say, but many supermarkets bare an extortionate cost of electricity due to keeping fridge/freezer doors open and having an entire store lit up like the pearly gates. If the price of electricity continues to rise, supermarkets will soon no longer be profitable.
