Is it possible for RVN mining to become more efficient?

Compared to ETH, RVN mining generates more heat and draws more power. Is it possible for the dev team to implement changes to reduce power consumption? I feel like this is one of the major factors holding RVN back from truly becoming a viable alt to ETH after proof of stake.
