Gas Fees – Minting NFT

We are looking to have a public sale of NFT's on the ETH blockchain via a smart contract. We want to do some free NFT giveaways before we launch our public sale. Would we just need to mint the NFT like normal and pay associated gas fees? Or is there a cheaper way of doing this?
