Can someone explain why I should consider learning/building upon/using MATIC?

Years ago I was looking for a way to avoid obscene, ridiculous App Store commissions, and a way to exchange lots of unique digital assets within apps. Ethereum seemed like a natural solution, so I started learning and experimenting. Of course it only took a few minutes to realize, holy smokes, gas fees are too high and transaction rate is too slow for my usage case.
Fast foward to today and ETH2 is right around the corner. I've still got limited time and energy, and really don't want to learn another stack and divest my attention. I really like Ethereum and keeping everything focused is ideal in my opinion. Yet, I hear more and more about L2 this and that, and MATIC keeps bubbling up to the top.
When ETH2 is fully realized, why should I consider learning, building upon, and using MATIC for anything? Will ETH2 not increase transaction rate by several times and reduce transaction costs? Will smart contracts become fractional expenses? Can I just stay within the ETH stack of tools and libraries and blockchain(s)?
