Isn’t PoS actually a stronger deterrent against malicious activity? Since you have vested interest in the network itself.

So i know PoW is battle tested at this point, and seems to work well. However I was thinking about something while digging deeper into the two strategies.

With Proof of Stake, you have a very strong vested interest in the network you are staking. Theoretically you could buy your way into a 51% attack, but it would destroy all your asset value.

With PoW however you just need 51% computational power, without really any vested interest. Which means (please correct any wrong assumptions im not actually sure about this):

  1. Multiple bad actors could collaborate to reach 51% silently.
  2. Actually maybe even one bad actor could reach 51%, but run their nodes in such as way that it seems as if it is multiple people.

At this point this bad actor could essentially tank the network, without the same financial hit they would take with PoS. Yes they would probably have spent some money on electricity, and GPUs in order to this. However the GPUs still have value after the attack, which essentially leaves the electricity as the only sunk cost.
