Fees for Transferring to a wallet

I'm somewhat new to all this so bear with me. I setup a new wallet with Atomic and wanted to transfer some eth to it from uphold. I did a test for $10 transfer & paid $8 in fees. I went back in to see what $1000 would be and it says $9 fee. I just lost $8 on my first transfer. So should I instead transfer it all at once to save money? Any links, or tips on fees when transferring to a wallet?
