Gas syntax

Is there a useful purpose for using the term 'Gas' as opposed to saying 'transaction fee', or just 'fee'? If not, what differentiates 'gas' from 'transaction fee'. It seems that in an already confusing and intimidating space, the more 'things' people can recognize as something they are familiar with the better it will be for adoption, though maybe adoption is too near sighted of a goal.
