Gas fee doesn’t match at all

Just lost few bucks because I’m cheap and ran out of the gas, I’m wondering how does it actually work because gas prices are under 10$ right now even for fast speeds yet MetaMask told me I have to pay 200$, just to connect my wallet to opensea, so I tried to change it manually and eth is gone.
