Why isn’t there an automatic check before sending crypto to see if the address you are sending it to is a valid address for that crypto?

I sometimes see people on here saying they sent crypto to the wrong address or an address for a different crypto by mistake and thus losing it forever. Why can't exchanges or wallets just run a simple check for a valid address for that crypto before sending it, and if it's unable to locate an address just cancel the transaction? Can't they just scan a list of valid addresses for that crypto before sending it to make sure it isn't just lost to the void forever? I've never encountered this problem myself, but apparently some people encounter this and I'm just wondering why a solution for this hasn't been implemented yet. It seems like a pretty obvious solution? Or am I missing something that would make this impossible to implement?
