Is a crypto wallet a must-have?

Does that apply regardless whether you have 10$, 100$, 1000$, or a million Dollars worth of crypto? Does it have to be something you have to pay for (Ledger, Trezor for example) ? Or are free of charge wallets like Coinbase Wallet / Trustwallet also fine?
