[SERIOUS] Moons are shit

Right boys and gals… this one MAY bit a tiny bit controversial and I don't expect to receive much love.

A grim moons price outlook

Looking at basic economic principles, one of the most basic is that for something to increase in price it needs to be linked to generation of value of any sort. Create goods, services, knowledge, entertainment, anything really where people would be willing to pay for. In any other scenario the price would be made out of thin air not sutainable. Short lived exceptions exist (for example meme stocks and coins) but they are exactly that: short lived and not sustainable.

So what do we as a sub add to the world that justifies several millions $ to be created and distributed to this subs users? How much value do we add for others? You could argue that this is an informative sub and people can interact, gain knowledge and education, entertainment… but I'd argue that this value is minimal, compared to other sources. A good technical book about crypto costs $20 and people make thousands here by shitposting.
Now this even assumes that people post here ONLY for the sakes of moons. But they don't. We had a sub and community before moons, so the added value by moons is much much lower.
One could even go so far and say the quality of the sub was better without moons, and that in fact, moons are actively destroying value and it should cost to post here, instead of earning money…

So much for my future expectations of the price. Hype not included, though…

But the fundamentals are great, right?

Moons were a cool idea on the paper. And the idea of distributing revenue of content created in social media to its creators via decentralised via blockchain tech still is a very neet one. I member Steemit! The problem here is, that the crypto system is tacked on top the existing Reddit karma system. It's easy to manipulate and issues that Reddit already has (like creating bubbles and echo chambers) are amplified by the monetary incentive. Moons harm healthy discussions and critical comments and incentivise cults and shitposting.

As a result, rules needed to be implemented in this sub. A lot of rules. It's tough to write a post about anything these days without getting it removed after 5 minutes for any arbitrary rule out of the countless ones. As all other subs prove, Karma alone is a sufficient and decent, community driven way of bringing interesting and liked topics to the front page, while reducing the visiblity of low quality posts.

Instead, this sub became a totalitarian hell hole. Rules on top of rules on top of rules. Whack-a-mole of people abusing the moons distribution system that was created to promote the idea of crypto. And each time some measures are taken, people will find new ways to circumvent it, creating more and more rules along.

This tight control is pretty much the opposite of most early crypto projects' ideology. Power to the people my ass. You either post what is expected or you will get so frustrated by removed posts, that you abonded this sub and move to other platforms. The bot-generated comments do the rest and no, they can NOT be controlled by creating more rules (don't get me started on the ChatGPT CCIP… forbidding a writing tool without any way to identify or control it, yey).

Nice ramblings, so what do you suggest then?

Abandon moons. There, I said it. Or at least fundamentally overthink and rework the distribution system. I think this sub is better of without them.
