ZKSync burning lots of gas, why?

ZKSync is consistently one of the top gas spenders as you can see on ultrasound.money/, outspending all other L2s such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base.. At the same time, it has fewer active users and less TVL than Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base. What is the explanation for this? I have noticed when using ZKSync that the gas fees seem high. Is it just less efficient than the other optimistic roll-ups and therefore uses a lot more gas?
