Today’s a good day, received my ledger and secured my BTC
Hello again! The other day i posted about finally ordering my ledger and asked for advice about staking, well todays the day, the ledger has arrived and it was a really nice straight forward procedure to setup
Firstly the packaging is great and the device is better than I expected, of course I looked to ensure no damage to the packaging to make sure it hadn't already been opened
NOTE: The $30 of btc though was a bit of a surprise, where it was a separate flyer from the ledger, so it was loose in the parcel packaging it arrived in, easy for someone to take out considering the overall parcel package has ledger written on it!
Then came setting up the ledger with help from ledger live, a nice way of doing it although probably could have done it with just the device.
I took the following steps which I've seen on here and would recommend to anyone new to Ledger
- Written down my seed phrase and made multiple copies of it in different locations (It was nice that ledger makes you enter the seed phrase after displaying them one by one
- Ensure that the device is legit via ledger live
- Wipe the device, re enter the seed phrase from first time setup
- Send a test amount of BTC before the whole load (not that there is too much)
Don't think there's anything else that I could have done, I've made sure the device is charged up and set monthly reminders to keep charging just to ensure the battery is all okay
I'm now in the process of unstaking my various other tokens (max 28 day wait) and will then look to transfer the rest over and enjoy piece of mind
QUESTION TIME:
1.Other than my seed phrase, is there anything else security wise I need to be aware of? My plan is to stake from the ledger, which from my post I've found out that the token staked would be in a smart contract, and if that contract is hacked then I could lose the tokens, which is the same as staking elsewhere, but I guess this isn't effecting my Ledger address at all and other tokens would be fine?
2.My ledger seed phrase, say the device is lost of damaged, is the only option to buy a new ledger, or is there a wallet where I can enter the seed phrase in temporarily if required? Obviously if this is an option wouldn't want to keep it long term as that defeats the whole point of the ledger
- Ledger Wallet Mobile App – I'm guessing when your ledger isn't connected to the app, then the values they show in the wallet is just from a point in time. Is there any risk to having this app on the phone? I'd assume any interactions would need to be paired with the ledger so should be safe
Stay safe everyone! And buy a ledger
