Why are Web3 apps so time-consuming and slow?

It seems like when I connect to a Web3 app with metamask, it hogs a lot of resources from my system and is very slow. compared to when I use other sites. What is the technical reason for this? Is my computer becoming some sort of node? Or is it just bad engineering?
