Question about long term blockchain solutions

If ETH layer 1 will no longer be used by anyone but rollups in the future (Vitalik said this on the Bankless podcast), why use ethereum instead of something built ground up for this future? Where the only thing that the L1 does is provide data availability? Or does it not matter to efficiency with the eth roadmap that it still can technically handle execution?
