Why do nodes interact with each other?

After reading what an EVM is, which is kind of a centralized system but since no one owns it, therefore it is decentralized.

Why do nodes have to talk to each other to propagate the state of EVM? Why can't all of them simply listen to this machine?

If I have misunderstood the EVM, please help me understand it better.
