What is the meaning of a Smart contract?

Hi, I'm a developer and I'm just looking inside Ether programming.

Well to create a small contract is not so difficult, bytheway what I don't understand is the meaning and their use?

What is useful for? I mean other than NTFT or similar things… I don't really understand the use.

Sorry for the newbie stupid question.
