Why would it be bad if the US classifies ETH as a security?

I understand we want ETH to be classified as a commodity, which means the SEC doesn’t have the ability to regulate it. Why? I don’t mind if exchanges have more paperwork requirements and the SEC is able to stop things like insider trading.
