How do Layer 2 solutions work for the average user in the future?

One complaint is that I would have to bridge all my funds all the time from L1->L2 or vice versa. Once the ETH upgrades are done how would these Layer 2 work? Let's say I have some Ethereum on Kraken and want to take advantage of Layer 2's to avoid fees. How would it work for the user?
