what would it take to make eth gas cheaper? is it even possible?

so, i have been looking into this web3 thing, maybe start programing in it but i see everyone complaining how its slow and gas is expensive so it has no chance getting wide spread adoption. is that something that can be changed or should i just look elsewhere? i mean yeah, it has a history so its more reliable but if anything useful sticks around bit longer then rest of the shitcoins it will instantly sink the eth, wont it? are there any qualities to eth that would make it worth it?
