When I try to mint an NFT on Etherscan/Polygonscan/etc., what is the purpose of the “metadata (uint256)” field?

Usually, there's just "payable amount" and "mint number", but sometimes there's also a 3rd field called "metadata". What does this field even do, and what should I put in it to mint my NFT?
