Cheapest way to get Eth into MetaMask?

Title. Im trying to get some Eth into MetaMask to then go ahead and buy another coin on a dex or something. First time doing this so I want to learn as much before hand so I don’t spend more than I need to in gas. Can layer 2’s like matic be used here to make this cheaper? Gas on matic is still $50. Is there an alternative?
