Ethereum Virtual Machine

I was hoping to get some help understanding the EVM a bit better. I understand what the EVM does but wanted to understand how it works when it connects to other layer 1 blockchains? What effect does this have on the Ethereum blockchain if any? Does it have any impact on ETH transactions?
