VDF in ethereum

Hey,

I recall some time ago eth researchers were looking into VDFs. I mainly remember Justin Drake talking about it. Since I understand they are not in the Eth2.0 roadmap, I am wondering wheter the Ethereum Foundation gave up on them? and if so why?
