What does ethereum 2.0 mean?

Hello everyone, I've been in the crypto space for a little while now and am confused as to what ethereum means for me. I hold a small amount of eth at the minute and am going to buy more, will the eth 2.0 be a separate coin or an update to the current one? Any help/explanation will be greatly appreciated.
