Question on ENS

Yesterday I spent some time checking some ENS names on Etherscan just out of curiosity. Apparently wallet addresses are linked to the .ETH handle. So do I understand it correctly, that the .ETH handle works as an alternative wallet address and could you sent funds to .ETH and receive it in your wallet? Does this also work when transferring funds from an exchange?
