Detailed steps of a mining process.

Can someone please explain step by step process of a miner before it starts hashing I know it gets info from the last mined block and latest transactions, verifies transactions . But what decides the block height. AFAIK every miner might get different transaction list, times. Once someone finds a block how long does it take for the rest of the miners drop whatever they doing and start mining the next?
