Are ETH-based tokens worth a shot?

I have recently started seeing more and more ETH-based tokens and have taken special interest in Illuvium, as I believe the play to earn (P2E) idea is pretty brilliant and what they do seems quite well-organized.

My question is: Are those kinds of tokens worth buying, or is it better to just invest in good ol’ ETH? Are the prices at all tied to each other in any way?
