2022 is coming. Why is Ether still a POS?

umm, using metamask to stake just ONE erc20 token currently sits around 50$ usd. Tried lowering gas fees and ended up with failed transaction, which eats up even more eth. Yeah, no thanks. I can't believe you people are still shilling this. There is absolutely no excuse at this point. Completely unusable to average joe. Change my mind.
