Am I an idiot for paying $124 in gas fees?

(Don't ask me for a private chat, I won't accept) I recently staked some OHM on the Olympus DAO site by transferring ETH to my metamask account and then to Olympus. But I was appalled to pay $124 in gas fees. Is there a way I could have avoided this with Metamask settings?
