Should I buy into Ethereum with such high fees?

Just starting out in crypto. I'm avoiding Bitcoin because of the energy impact so going all in on Altcoins. My question is why is everyone so Bullish on ETH ecosystem when the gas fees for ETH and ERC-20 make it so expensive to move around? Is everyone just hoping the merge fixes everything and so buying in early?

Edit: I know ETH is currently proof of work as well, but they have a plan to go proof of stake which Bitcoin does not.
