Gas Fees are killing small investors

A $40 purchase I wanted to make wants to charge me $200 dollars in Gas Fees. How are people with low income supposed to afford this?!? When are these supposed upgrades coming out? ETH can't handle this much traffic without squeezing every last penny out of your wallet. Until these upgrades come out ETH is a shitcoin to me.
