Transaction costs, EIP1559 and ETH2.0

Tried to find out when we can expect the gas prices to drop and now I am confused when that will happen. I read that it won't happen during the switch to PoS? There seems to be quite some conflicting statements when googling for some answers on this. Could someone please explain it simply? Or refer me to a good article on it? Thank you!
