What makes a block valid? Or what exactly validators are doing?

So, while listening Vitalik talking about sharding, I really miss the point of validating a block. What makes a block valid? When he says that a randomly chosen nodes will be validating a block and others nodes will trust them, what does he mean? explain like i'm five
