How can criminals use blockchain when every transaction is public?

One of the criticism people levy against crypto is that it is used for criminal activities, but how can criminals use blockchain when every transaction is public?

Every transaction, every from and to address involved are all there on the blockchain…so how can it be a good medium for criminals? I would think criminals would prefer something that is not so transparent.
