Alt coins that complement ETH

Hi guys, I hear a lot about alt coins that are competing with ETH but I was wondering if there are any coins that work to complement it. I don’t see ether going anywhere soon but also think that investing in developing projects might also be a good idea. Are there any that will not suffer from ether’s rise? I know there are definite answers here but was hoping for some insight. Thanks!
