Seriously, what is the deal with NFTs?

I don't get it. People are paying money to "own" an original copy of what amounts to a digital painting? Not even a good digital painting, but complete nonsense? I cannot see any use, at all, for NFTs. To me it's just pure nonsense. Can someone explain me why I'm wrong?
