BTM ETH experience?

I wanted to try a BTM just for the experience to test how it worked so I put $40 into a Bitcoin Depot machine for ETH. The rate was horrible for the ETH and there was a $4 fee too, so I knew I was getting pretty screwed, but then, when it came through on etherscan there was a $46 transaction fee, and the transaction never appeared anywhere on my MetaMask (which is what I scanned). Is this normal? I knew they were expensive but that felt like pure theft! I thought I'd get a few fractions of ETH at least…
