Where are smart contracts running?

so I decided to make a blockchain that implements smart contracts as a final year project, and so far I am understanding everything fine, the only thing I can't wrap my head around is where are smart running? I always see people say they run on the blockchain but how can a blockchain actively run code? how does it operate on a code level?
